NEW in the IBAC project catalogue: Colours of the Bible

Singapore is a rich cultural melting pot with significant ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity. The Christian community is growing, with around18% of the population currently identifying themselves as such, and Christian festivals are widely celebrated along with those of the other major religions. Yet despite a vibrant Church, the majority of Singaporeans still have low levels of biblical awareness and engagement.

Recent statistics (from Pew Research Centre) indicate that those under 34 are most likely to identify as having ‘no religion’ and this, together with a growing secularist mindset in civil society, highlights an increasing need to advocate for the Bible. The Bible Society of Singapore has identified art as an effective vehicle for engaging young and old alike with the Scriptures. Inviting participants to creatively connect with biblical themes and stories in the Bible, they aim to bring biblical truth and values alive, enabling the audience to see the application of the Bible today.

Now in its third year, Colours of the Bible is a joint project between the Bible Society of Singapore and the Embassy of Israel. Each year, the project takes on a different theme. In 2014, this was ‘Celebrating feasts and festivals’ and 2015 focused on ‘Heroes of the Bible’. This year takes the theme of ‘Milestones of the Bible’. At the heart of the project is an art competition which invites creative submissions based on the given theme, with a public exhibition then put on to showcase the entries.
